Can I fit standard shoes to a worn drum?

No. Once the drum exceeds its wear limit the shoe arc no longer matches the drum surface, pedal travel grows and braking becomes uneven. Replace the drum, or ask us for an oversize arc (+0.25 or +0.50 mm) if your market prefers that route.

A drum brake shoe is matched by three numbers: drum inner diameter, shoe width and lining thickness. The anchor type — single leading shoe, twin leading shoe, or cam-and-pin — then decides whether the set sits correctly on the backing plate. Measure the drum at three points and take the largest reading: worn drums read oval, and a set matched to the smallest reading will drag.

Non-asbestos organic (NAO) lining is the right default for commuters and a general aftermarket range — quieter, easier on the drum surface and predictable when cold. Semi-metallic lining handles heat better for loaded work bikes and hill routes, at the cost of more drum wear and slightly more noise.
