Cuándo cambiar un kit de embrague y qué revisar primero
Clutch replacement is one of the most frequently misdiagnosed jobs in small-engine repair. The kit is cheap relative to the labour, so the temptation is to replace it and see whether the symptom goes away. Sometimes it does, and sometimes the new kit wears out in the same way within a few thousand kilometres.
Check one: free play at the lever
A clutch with no free play rides the release mechanism permanently, which means it is partially disengaged all the time. The symptom mimics a worn clutch — slip under load — but the cause is adjustment.
Set the free play to the manufacturer's figure before condemning the plates. This costs two minutes and occasionally saves the whole job.
Check two: oil and lubrication
Most small motorcycle clutches run in engine oil. Friction modifiers in car-specific oils — the "energy conserving" grades — reduce the friction coefficient enough to cause slip in a wet clutch. If the customer has recently changed oil, ask what went in.
Contaminated oil from a failing seal produces the opposite symptom: a clutch that drags and will not fully disengage, with a smell that is unmistakable once you have met it.
Check three: the basket and hub
Look at the fingers of the clutch basket. Repeated loading of the friction plate tabs against the aluminium fingers produces notches, and once those notches exist the plates cannot slide freely — the clutch drags, and the new plates will wear unevenly from day one.
A notched basket is the single most common reason a fresh clutch kit fails early. If the notches are slight they can be filed; if they are deep, the basket has to be replaced with the kit.
Check four: the wear pattern on the plates
- Even wear across all friction plates: normal service life. Replace the set.
- Outer plates worn, inner plates like new: the pressure plate is not lifting squarely, or the springs have gone soft on one side.
- Blue or glazed friction surface: overheating, usually from slip caused by the wrong oil or by a rider who holds the bike on the clutch at traffic lights.
- Steel plates with heat discolouration or warping: check that the steels are flat on a surface plate before reuse. Warped steels cause judder that no amount of new friction plate will fix.
Replace as a set
Friction plates, steel plates and springs wear as a system. Replacing only the friction plates on a set of tired springs produces a clutch that engages higher and slips sooner than it should, and the customer will attribute it to the new plates.
Every kit we supply includes the cover gasket, because the gasket is the part most often forgotten and the one that turns a two-hour job into a comeback.
