PPAP para repuestos de moto: qué debe pedir realmente un comprador OEM

PPAP — Production Part Approval Process — comes from the automotive world, and it solves a specific problem: proving that a supplier can produce a part consistently at rate, not just that one beautiful sample exists. Motorcycle OEMs rarely need the full automotive package, but the proportionate version is worth every buyer's attention. Here is what to ask for and what each document actually proves.

The proportionate package

DocumentWhat it provesAsk for it when…
Dimensional reportThe part matches drawing tolerancesAlways
Material certsRaw material spec and traceabilitySafety parts (brakes, discs, frames)
Performance test reportThe part meets functional specAlways for friction, suspension, electrical
Capability study (Cpk)The process holds tolerance at rateHigh-volume or safety-critical parts
Control planWhich checks happen, how oftenOngoing supply relationships

What each item is worth

Dimensional report is the floor — a full measurement of one sample against every drawing dimension. Cheap to produce, and its absence tells you the supplier does not actually measure against drawings.

Cpk is the item buyers undervalue most. A dimension can pass on one sample and be out of tolerance on 10% of production; Cpk measures the process, not the specimen. For brake components we target Cpk ≥ 1.33 on friction-critical dimensions, and we can show the data behind it.

Control plan is what keeps quality after the first batch. It lists every check in production, its frequency, and the reaction plan on failure. If a supplier cannot produce one, quality is whatever the shift leader remembers to do.

Scaling the ask to the part

Full automotive PPAP on a $0.30 gasket is theatre. Proportionality is the skill:

  • Safety parts (brake discs, pads, clutch components, frame parts): dimensional + material + performance + Cpk. Non-negotiable.
  • Functional parts (carburetors, levers, cables): dimensional + performance test.
  • Cosmetic parts: appearance approval + material statement.

The conversation to have

Ask a prospective manufacturer which elements of this package they produce routinely. A real OEM supplier answers with document names and frequencies from memory; a trading company forwards the question and answers a day later. Either way you learn something, and the package you build becomes part of the purchase order — which is the only place a quality requirement actually lives.
