Motorcycle Brake Pad Replacement
Complete Tutorial

Beginner‑Friendly Step‑by‑Step Guide

Brake pads are critical safety consumables. Worn pads cause weak braking, longer stopping distances, and rotor damage. Mastering DIY replacement saves money and is highly efficient.

🔍 Replacement Criteria

  • Friction material thickness below 2mm – measure or visually inspect.
  • Metallic screeching or grinding noise – the wear indicator is contacting the rotor.
  • Spongy or soft lever feel – pads are too thin to transmit proper hydraulic pressure.
  • Noticeably reduced braking power – stopping distances have increased significantly.

⚠️ If any of these signs appear, replace the pads immediately.

🔧 Step‑by‑Step Procedure

  1. Expose the caliper — put the bike on a stand, remove the front/rear wheel outer guard to expose the brake caliper.
  2. Remove old pads — unscrew the caliper mounting bolts, remove the caliper, pull out the old brake pads, and clean dust and brake dust from the caliper recess.
  3. Push the piston back — use a dedicated tool (or a C‑clamp with a wooden pad) to push the brake piston back evenly. Ensure it returns flat and square – avoid tilting or binding.
  4. Install new pads — insert the new brake pads, align them with the retaining slots, and make sure they move freely without sticking.
  5. Reinstall & firm the lever — reinstall the caliper, tighten the mounting bolts to spec, and repeatedly pull the brake lever until the feel becomes firm and consistent.
  6. Low‑speed test ride — take a slow test ride, apply the brakes gently to bed in the new pads, and avoid hard stops for the first few kilometres.

⏳ Break‑in Tips

🛑 The first 300 km is a break‑in period. Avoid high‑speed emergency braking and harsh stops. Ride smoothly and apply progressive pressure to allow the pad material to transfer evenly to the rotor surface.

✅ Gradual bedding‑in ensures optimal braking performance, longer pad life, and prevents rotor warping.

Good brakes give you confidence. Replace them before they fail, bed them in gently, and enjoy safe, predictable stopping power every time you ride.
