Maintenance Guide

Motorcycle Chain Cleaning & Lubrication
Complete Tutorial

Say goodbye to noise, stretching, and skipping teeth

The motorcycle chain is the heart of the drivetrain. Constantly exposed to the elements, it quickly collects sand, grime, water, and grease. A dry or dirty chain accelerates wear, causes rattling, saps power, and can even lead to skipping or derailment. Regular cleaning and lubrication is the single most cost-effective maintenance you can do.

📅 Maintenance Interval

  • Daily commuting: Clean & lube every 500–800 km.
  • Rain or off‑road riding: Service immediately after the ride.
  • Long‑term storage: Re‑apply lubricant once a month.

🔧 Step‑by‑Step Procedure

  1. Raise the rear wheel — put the bike on a centre stand or paddock stand so the rear wheel spins freely. Turn off the ignition to prevent accidental throttle.
  2. Spray on cleaner — thoroughly coat the entire chain, inside and out, including the gaps between links. Let it sit for 1–2 minutes to break down grease and grime.
  3. Scrub every section — use a stiff brush along the chain’s grain, focusing on link gaps and roller recesses. Rotate the wheel and clean each section progressively.
  4. Wipe and dry — remove all residual cleaner and dirty fluid with a clean rag. Leave the chain to air‑dry completely (about 5–10 minutes).
  5. Apply lubricant — spin the wheel slowly and spray chain oil evenly, concentrating on the inside run (the side that contacts the sprocket). Make sure every link is coated.
  6. Let it penetrate — wait 3 minutes for the oil to seep into the pin and roller clearances. Finally, wipe off any excess on the outside to avoid attracting dust and dirt.

💡 Pro Tips & Pitfalls

❌ Never use engine oil or gear oil as chain lube — their viscosity is wrong, they trap dirt and form abrasive paste.

❌ Don’t over‑apply — surface oil doesn’t help; it only attracts grit and accelerates wear.

✅ Always dry before lubricating — any leftover cleaner or moisture will trap water against the metal, leading to rust.

A clean, well‑oiled chain runs quieter, lasts longer, and delivers every watt of power to the rear wheel. Make it a habit — your bike will thank you.
